FAQ’s
Frequently Asked Questions about CBT & Coaching
1. What is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)?
CBT is a structured, evidence-based approach that helps you identify and change unhelpful thinking patterns. I offer CBT in Tunbridge Wells and online across the UK, supporting people with anxiety, trauma, and stress to regain balance and control.
2. How is coaching different from therapy?
Coaching focuses on helping you move forward, achieve goals, and build confidence, while therapy works through emotional or behavioural challenges. Many clients benefit from combining both approaches, especially during life transitions such as divorce or career change.
3. What is divorce coaching, and how can it help me?
Divorce coaching provides emotional and practical support during and after separation. It helps you process grief, rebuild confidence, and make clear decisions — blending therapeutic understanding with future-focused coaching tools.
4. Can CBT help with trauma or perinatal anxiety?
Yes. CBT is highly effective for trauma recovery and perinatal mental health. We can explore how past experiences affect current thoughts and behaviours, and develop coping techniques for lasting change.
5. Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. I work with clients nationwide via secure online therapy. Many find virtual sessions as effective as in-person appointments, offering flexibility and privacy.
6. How long does therapy or coaching usually take?
Every person is different. Some clients benefit from a few focused sessions, while others prefer a longer-term approach. We’ll discuss your goals together and agree on a plan that feels right for you.
7. Is everything I share confidential?
Absolutely. All sessions are conducted in a safe, private space, following BABCP and GDPR ethical standards. Confidentiality is central to the therapeutic relationship.
8. What if I’m not sure which service I need — CBT, therapy, or coaching?
That’s perfectly okay. I offer a free 10-minute consultation to help you decide which approach, CBT, coaching, or divorce coaching, best fits your needs.
9. Do you work with clients outside Tunbridge Wells?
Yes. While I see clients in Tunbridge Wells, I also work online with people across the UK. You can choose the format that works best for you.
10. How do I get started?
Simply contact me here to arrange an initial consultation. I’ll respond within 24 hours to confirm availability and answer any initial questions. Will it work?
There is a large wealth of evidence, continuing to increase and refine, to support the effectiveness of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) as a treatment for a number of conditions. The Government NICE Guidelines recommend CBT as a treatment for Anxiety Disorders including Social Phobia, Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
CBT is recommended by NICE Guidelines as a treatment for Depression. Depression is a broad term but a central feature is depressed mood and or loss of pleasure in most activities. Severity is determined by both the number and severity of symptoms, as well as the degree of impairment of function. CBT is also effective as a treatment for a wide range of other areas such as relationship difficulties, PTSD, stress, motivation, reflecting on and helping a person to live the life they would like.
How often do I have to attend?
Regular attendance at sessions helps to provide the best outcomes. Weekly is preferable but less frequently can be discussed. There is flexibility around this. The area of difficulty will indicate how many sessions are required, typically this can be between 1-20 sessions, changes can be substantial after just 3 sessions.
How long does each session last?
Each session is usually 50 minutes. For some treatments this may be longer.
How much does each session cost?
Please enquire for details. There may be additional costs for reports and similar.

Online Cognitive Behaviour Therapy
We are in a world where technology has made it possible for you to work and live differently. 2020 has introduced us to a concept where we can achieve greater flexibility and balance in our lives. Our work has adapted to reflect this, even our social lives, exercise, family life to name a few. Psychological therapy and groups are available to you, when and where it suits you and your lifestyle. It can fit around your commitments. Wherever you are in the world.
Further training to deliver online therapy and groups has been attended and it is proving to be a successful way of working together. Studies support this as an effective way of delivering psychological therapies, being as effective as face to face therapy. (Chakrabati 2015). This way of working allows you to access support when you need to, and it can fit easily and discreetly around your lifestyle. This makes it convenient and easy to access. Sessions are usually delivered through online video, but can be telephone. Even talk and walk sessions (depending on your location). You can access this through your phone, computer or tablet.
All 1:1 therapy is now available remotely, via an online platform. This has proven to be a successful way to access therapy for clients. Clients have told us that their experience is that there is still a strong relationship between therapist and client, yet it is very convenient for them.

Mindfulness training can help us to recognise thoughts, patterns, tendencies, physical responses. It can support us when we may experience difficulty, such as anxiety, stress and sadness and find ourselves spiralling downwards, sometimes to a clinical depression level. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) is recommended by NICE Guidelines for people who have experienced 2 or more episodes of depression.
There is an ever increasing body of randomised clinical trials and evidence to support MBCT as a first class approach, the Gold Standard (Kuyken et al, 2006). It is proven to be as effective as anti-depressants for those who have experienced 2 or more episodes of depression.
Mindfulness Cognitive Therapy focusses on teaching you to make a simple yet radical shift in your relationship with thoughts, feelings and bodily sensations. Mindfulness is an experiential approach, using meditations and other techniques within a group, significant learning and changes can occur.
Gold Standard Mindfulness Courses available include:
Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy for Depression (MBCT-D). Research shows that MBCT is as effective as anti-depressants for the relapse prevention of Depression.
